News from KNOWhere - 1-22-2009

We’ve got something great coming up here at the library! On Saturday, January 31 at 11 am, Donna Washington will be performing at the Jenkins County Library, and at 2 pm she will be at the Screven County Library. She is a nationally-recognized and multiple award-winning author, storyteller and recording artist who enchants audiences young and old. Please join us in giving her a warm Georgia welcome and enjoy a performer that will leave your whole family spellbound! This program is supported in part by the Grassroots Arts Program of the Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly and in partnership with the Statesboro Arts Council.

Winter is definitely in full swing, and that makes it a great time to curl up inside where it’s warm to read a great book or watch a movie – and you can get both free here at the library! From self-help books to kid’s movies, from the latest Nora Roberts to the most current health topics, we’ve got something for everyone!

Monday, January 26 is the Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year. Why not pick up a book on Chinese cookery or something on Chinese culture or history, or perhaps celebrate 2009 (the International Year of Astronomy) by learning about the moon?

Don’t forget our fun Free Movie Fridays! Every Friday at 3:30 pm we have a different great movie to see on the big screen! This week it’s SAVING SARAH CAIN, about a newspaper columnist who goes to her sister’s funeral, only to discover that she’s been named as guardian of her five Amish nieces and nephews. Will she do what’s best for them, or for herself? Next week's movie will be MEET THE BROWNS about a single mother who goes to the funeral of the father she never met and meets the family she never knew.



Tuesdays at 10 am is our great storytime - it's a ton of fun for the little ones, so come and join us!

CareerOneStop

@ent site is the "nation's publicly-funded resource for jobseekers and businesses. Find jobs -- from entry level to technical to professional to CEO. Identify job-ready workers with the right skills. ... Explore alternative career paths, compare salary data for different occupations, learn which careers are hot, get resume writing tips and job interview strategies, and much more." Craigslist
Find postings about community, housing rentals, jobs, personals, events, for-sale and wanted items, and services. This not-for-profit site began in the San Francisco Bay Area and has expanded to other parts of the United States and other countries. The only fee is for job postings. Includes discussion forums. Browsable and searchable by region or city.

Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA)
“Dedicated to researching and recreating pre-17th Century European history” is how it’s officially described. But the actual activities include armoring up for “battle”, dressing in medieval clothing, preserving ancient skills from sewing and calligraphy to blacksmithing and swordsmanship, and more!

News from KNOWhere - 1-12-09

Come stock up on your books and DVDs, because it's going to be a long weekend! The library will be closed Monday, January 19 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We will reopen at our regular time Tuesday, January 20.

The Screven County Library Board will be meeting at 4 pm on Thursday, January 8 at the Screven County Library. The Jenkins County Memorial Library Board will be meeting at 10:30 am on January 14 at the Jenkins County Memorial Library.


Federal and State Income Tax forms will be available at the library soon. As soon as they come in, we'll let you know! If you just can't wait to get that refund, though, go to www.irs.gov for your Federal income tax needs or http://www.etax.dor.ga.gov/IndTax_TSD.aspx for the Georgia ones.

Do-It-Yourselfers, check your shelves! If you have purchased WIRING A HOUSE, 3RD EDITION or WIRING COMPLETE: EXPERT ADVICE FROM START TO FINISH, both published by Taunton Press and sold at hardware stores, please return them to the store you bought them from! it appears that the publishers were not careful enough about checking the instructions, and you could get a nasty shock if you followed their directions. Want to know more? Check out the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's release or the company's website at www.taunton.com . (And no - we don't have either of these books at the library!)

Tuesday, January 13 at 4 pm we’ll be having our Teen Book Club meeting. Teens are welcome to join us for food, fun discussion and a free book! This month, we’re discussing CODE TALKERS by Joseph Bruchac.

Don’t forget our fun Free Movie Fridays, every Friday at 3:30 pm! This Friday’s movie is THE BABYSITTERS CLUB, about seven very different best friends and how they made the most of their summer. Next Friday will be MAD MONEY.

Universe Awareness for Young Children (UNAWE)
Details about this "international outreach programme that uses the beauty and scale of the universe to inspire very young children in underprivileged environments." Features project background, a blog, international event listings, and educational materials (such as games and hand-on activities). Includes a Spanish version of the website. The project, which is part of the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, is hosted at Leiden Observatory, Leiden University, Netherlands.

Happy New Year! We’re pretty excited here at the library about our plans for the year to come. You’ll have your chances to meet authors and artists here at the library, join us for special Wii game days, our Free Movie Fridays will keep on rolling, and you’ll be able to get creative in many ways on many days… and that’s just for starters!

The library will be closed Monday, January 19 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

No, we have no Federal or state income tax forms in... yet. We'll let you know as soon as they come in, though!

Tuesdays at 10 am bring your little ones in for our wonderful weekly storytime. They’ll listen to a story and then do a craft project. It’s a great way to spark the love of reading and learning in your preschooler, so bring them in for fun times!

Thursday, January 8 at 4 pm we’ll be having our creative monthly Craft Day! It’s a fun craft project for all ages, and it’s not to be missed!

Teens, come in Tuesday, January 13 at 4 pm for our great Teen Book Club! It’s a chance to read a great book that you choose, and to keep that book when you’re done!
